The Islamic calendar is based on the moon, also known as the Hijri calendar. This calendar began after the Prophet's migration to Medina. The start of each month is determined by the sighting of the moon at the end of the preceding month. Upon sighting the moon, a new month begins. Each month starts with a new lunar cycle. Thus, the Islamic calendar for 2018 provides a rough overview of upcoming Islamic dates since the start of each month relies on moon sightings. The Islamic calendar consists of 12 months like the Gregorian calendar. However, it comprises 355-354 days as opposed to the Gregorian calendar's 366-365 days. The Hijri year starts with Muharram, followed by Safar, Rabi' al-Awwal, Rabi' ath-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada ath-Thani, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qi'dah, and finally Dhu al-Hijjah.
